Top 5 reasons Charcuterie Boards are the favourite party platter of the year!

Charcuterie boards are all the rage lately, as you may have noticed. They are not only all over your Facebook feeds but can also be found on most restaurant menus and even at your boss' work party. So, what is a charcuterie board? And why do I need it in my life?

“Char-cute-eerie” … “Char cuchi” … How do I say it?

We should start by learning how to say the word charcuterie. It's funny how people pronounce it in their own way. Honestly, I don't blame them... it's an odd-looking word. The word charcuterie is pronounced, "shaar-coo-ter-ree." Don't be intimidated by the fancy French word because charcuterie boards are a lot of fun to make.

 So… what is charcuterie?

Charcuterie boards are not new at all... In fact, they have been around for quite some time! Charcuterie is the French term for the culinary art of selling and preparing meat products, such as ham, sausages, and salami. Today, a charcuterie board typically consists of meats, cheeses, and other treats arranged on a wooden or stone board.

Charcuterie boards can be customized to suit any occasion and taste, and they can be made in whatever size you prefer. They're easy to make, fun to eat, and they feel indulgent. However, they are always meant to be seen or used as a celebration. You can fill them with deli meats from your local grocery store, cheese from a local cheese shop, and anything in between!

Okay, now what should I put on my charcuterie board?

A charcuterie board can be made with anything, but it is typically associated with cheese and meat. Choosing a variety of cheeses is an excellent place to start. It is recommended to include both hard cheese like applewood smoked cheddar, and soft cheese like brie. Next, add cured and sliced deli meats such as ham and salami to your board. Slices can be arranged flat or in loose rolls. Adding crackers and baguette slices to your board is a good idea. Simply eat them on their own or top them with the meat and cheese you've served. Lastly, you can fill any empty spaces on your board with nuts, fresh fruit, and jam or spreads.

Here are some recommendations for cheeses you can buy at your local grocery store if you decide to make a board at home:
